Talking Book

Time Well Spent

·

Hello my dear Anne,

I am writing to you because I know you have been experiencing some trouble with finding things to do on the plantation and I have decided we should take a trip this weekend since we both have had so much free time. You also seem like you need a break from hanging around Uncle Julius and bringing up his stories so often. You become so attached to his stories and worry yourself even more when you start to wonder if he’s telling the truth and if those things could have even happened. It seems like you can be using your time more wisely. I’m just not sure there is any benefit to reading these race tales so sentimentally the way you do. I tend to remind myself that Julius does not know much and makes things up. The conjure woman especially was ridiculous. Then again, it does help keep you entertained. I’m not sure if that is the smartest way to approach his stories though but they do linger in your mind for a while. I wonder if incorporating sentimentalism would help with one’s understanding of a subject.
