Journal Entry for I Jus Need Some Practice
For this move I wanted to focus on a real aspect of Julius’ past that Chestnutt doesn’t really touch on. For this move I did research regarding the manner in which slaves were taught to read and write. I pulled some information from an article entitled “Pretends he can read” Runaways and Literacy in Colonial America, 1730–1776, by Antonio T. Bly. (http://muse.jhu.edu/article/250474)
In terms of Julius, it is also a solidifying moment for him and Annie. These little scenes are what makes their relationship stronger. Although, despite the fact that he likes her, he doesn’t feel bad for deceiving her. At the end of the day, his goals are still intact to serve himself and his peers.
